Meditation for Moms

Are you a mom and feeling like something needs to change? Maybe you would like to feel more calm, present, joyful, positive... Here I explain why meditation is for moms! And how practicing regularly can improve your happiness and wellbeing - and ultimately improve your resilience to stress. The Modern Meditation techniques I teach are simple and accessible, allowing them to be easy to use in everyday life. I am starting new classes 'Meditation for Moms' in person (South Birmingham) and online too.

I'm Becs and I'm a certified Yoga, Pregnancy Yoga and Modern Meditation teacher. Here to share yoga, meditation and wellbeing guidance with individuals and organisations.

My little family and I have just moved to Kings Heath, Birmingham. I have been thinking about what new classes to bring to my new local area. I have lots of ideas, but as I settle into our new home I want to start with just one class....

✨MEDITATION FOR MOMS✨

Let me introduce myself...

I found meditation in 2019 and it was the real catalyst of change for me. I felt pulled into deepening my knowledge of meditation and continued to do my 100 hour meditation teacher training in 2020.

My interest in yoga continued and so I decided to complete my 200 hour yoga teacher training in 2022 / 2023. During my training I became pregnant and I found yoga to be my way of managing the unknowns and stress of pregnancy.

I practiced yoga throughout pregnancy and up to 2 days before the birth. I am so passionate about how positively yoga and meditation benefits and supports pregnancy, birth and beyond. The most obvious thing for me to do was my pregnancy yoga training that I completed in 2024.

Now Rosie is 18 months and we have started our next adventure in Kings Heath, Birmingham.

Yoga and meditation (it is the same thing, but one is seated and one is movement) teachings have guided me over the years and helped me through all the challenges and joys too. I want to continue to share this knowledge locally.

I am starting with #meditationformoms.

I teach accessible meditation and I keep it simple and easy so it sticks. I am super friendly and my classes are inclusive, warm and welcoming.

Why is meditation is for moms?

"Thanks for today was feeling quite negative this morning and feel much more positive after your class!"

#1 Shift into positive thinking patterns

Meditation is a pause to reflect on what is real and shift into more positive thinking patterns. When we are tired and we have had very little personal space it is very easy to fall into feelings of overwhelm. That could be feelings of suffering, pain, being closed, restricted or stuck - in the yoga sutras this is called dukkha. In yoga we cultivate the opposite. These are feelings of openness, spaciousness, comfort and ease - in the yoga sutras this is called sukha. When we practice meditation regularly we can observe the transition of feeling stuck or restricted "dukkha", to feelings of openness "sukha".

When we feel like we have more mental space we start to think with more clarity and more positively. Each week we will explore a different theme but we will cultivate feelings of opening up to love, compassion, curiosity and potential.

One of my favourite quotes is “We see things as we are, not as they are”. This describes perfectly how our perceptions shape how we interpret and experience our world. It's very much like when we anticipate or expect something to happen. When you wake up and decide "today is going to be a good day" and typically you will have a much better day! Compared to waking up and deciding "today is going to be a bad day."

If you could navigate motherhood with more mental space, clarity and positivity how do you think that would impact your family too?

"Thank YOU so much for creating the space and energy to provide me and baby with lots of love and warmth we really felt it every week in your class! I always felt like I floated out of your classes in a blissful bubble."

~ Maya (after the birth of her baby boy)

#2 Practice prioritising your Self care

I regularly remind my students that "there is no such thing as a good or bad meditation, it is just a practice!" The word "practice" reminds us that meditation requires consistency - and the consistency is a commitment to your Self. As a mom when was the last time you did something for you? (I am not talking about having a shower or going to the toilet on your own!) When was the last time you did something without your kid(s) that really gives you joy and lights you up?

journal practice

***JOURNAL OPPORTUNITY***

  1. Take a pause now and write down what you have done recently just for you (that gives you joy and lights you up!)

  2. Is that something you did for you regular? If it is not regular, how can you bring more of this into your daily / weekly life?

  3. How do you want to start prioritising your Self care more into your days?

In my meditations I often begin saying "Up until this point, you have directed your attention outwards. Now is the time to slow down, relax and turn your attention inwards..." As moms our attention is focused on our kid / partner / cat / dog / sister / nephew.... (I could go on!) and checking how they are doing / feeling. How regularly do you check in with how you are doing / feeling? A regular meditation practice gives the space for you to regularly check in with the body and mind. We allow ourselves to slow down, relax, turn our attention inwards. We practice finding stillness, quietness and self awareness...

There is often reluctance to meditation (I wrote a blog about it here!). In my classes we create a safe space and we cultivate positive feelings of presence, grounding and calmness. I am really passionate that meditation is important to our happiness and wellbeing - and I teach how to make meditation work for you (I wrote blog about this too here).

"Your pregnancy yoga is my favourite part of the week!"

~ Lily (34 weeks pregnant)

#3 Meet like minded moms

If you are reading this and intend to start meditating or meditating more - then I am thrilled! If you are reading this and intend to start attending meditation classes (mine or others locally) - then I am even more thrilled! If you are new or would like to develop your meditation skills attending a class is a very good place to start.

My classes are interactive with lots of opportunity for discussions around meditation / mindfulness. You will gain a deeper understanding and benefit from being able to ask questions and hear other people's questions too. I teach accessible meditation and I keep it simple and easy so it sticks. I am super friendly and my classes are joyful and you will learn to look forward to meditating!

Over the years I have held space for yoga and meditation classes I have been truly amazed with the groups that have come together and created real community, connection - and, well, magic! ✨ The quotes I have included in this blog have come from real, beautiful people that have shown up with their individual energies and collectively powered our classes to create something very special. There is something very powerful and beautiful in a room full of mommas. We connect through the joy and wisdom of yoga, meditation - and being moms in a world of change and challenges!
