8 top tips for a meditation practice that sticks

Are you interested in the power of meditation? Maybe you've tried it before but struggled to keep it up? Or maybe you just don't get it? The Modern Meditation techniques I teach are simple and accessible, allowing them to be easy to use in everyday life. In my classes I hold space for you to develope your meditation skills and I offer guidance on how you can make meditation work for you. (And it doesn't have to be 20 minutes twice a day...!)

I'm Becs and I'm a certified Yoga, Pregnancy Yoga and Modern Meditation teacher. Here to share yoga, meditation and wellbeing guidance with individuals and organisations.

Here are top tips to becoming a daily meditator!... And if you're in Stockport and you are a beginner to meditation and / or if you would like to develope your meditation skills I recommend joining my classes too. Book here.

Tip #1 - Everything you do can be a meditation

Modern Meditation is the practice of purposely focusing your attention on the present moment, wherever you are and whatever you are doing. That actually means everything you do can be a meditation. Not only can you practice seated meditation, you can practice mindful moments / mindfulness across the day. I recommend starting with 5 minute meditation and you can aim to build it up (20 minutes?). Then practice using your meditation skills of paying attention throughout the day.

Most of the time we go through life unconsciously. Neuroscientists say that most of us are conscious only 5% of the time! We can practice connecting our mind moment by moment. Transforming the unconscious, conscious. Paying attention to wherever you are and whatever you are doing.

Tip #2 - Dedicate time to meditate daily and start a habit tracker

If you are struggling building meditation into your daily routine try starting a habit tracker. I’m a big fan of habit tracking. For example use a wall calendar and write 'M' every day you practice meditation. Even if you only practice for 2 minutes (2 minutes is better than nothing)! As you move through the month you will visually see all the days you have dedicated to this intention. Hello, dopamine! You'll find as you start to experience the benefits of meditation more and more your meditations may become longer. But start small and be realistic.

Tip #3 - Let go of fear and resistance to change

There’s usually a moment when we’re ready to change but we get stuck by fear. We find comfort in our old patterns / habits / cycles / addictions, even though they no longer serve us. Our mind tells us fearful stories that we accept to be true. These patterns / habits / cycles / addictions keep us stuck and small, inside a comfort zone.

In meditation we learn to watch our thoughts and we learn we are not our thoughts! When we learn we are not our thoughts we experience empowerment and freedom! If we want to change, grow and evolve we need face the challenge and the resistance, and practice being comfortable with the uncomfortable. We can learn to accept whatever is happening. We can accept feelings such as fear and let go of resistance to change.

In my class journals questions I ask:

What am I afraid of?

What am I avoiding?

What would a transformed person do?

What am I here for?

I know everybody who shows up has their own priorities, intentions or purpose. We will explore how meditation can support what is important to you.

Tip #4 - Pay attention by s l o w i n g d o w n

Do you feel like you’re always doing stuff, in a rush? We go through life unconsciously, stuck in our habit patterns. Our minds already know what to do, so often our attention is elsewhere. When we slow down, we become more aware of our thoughts, our words, our actions – our habits. Slowing down helps us to learn how to consciously respond instead of unconsciously react. We can make a conscious choice, rather being stuck in unconscious habits or patterns that do not serve us.

We can make a conscious choice to practice meditation when we feel anxious, stressed or overwhelmed. Rather than grasp at stuff that is unhealthy!! Try transforming something you do daily, slower. Notice the better decisions you make when you are taking a slower pace.

Tip #5 - Practice journaling to notice changes

Start using a journal or a notebook to regularly check in with how you feel. You can write down anything that comes to you. You can notice any changes that have happened since starting to meditate on a regular basis. Writing is not only cathartic, but you can really start to notice how things (thoughts, words, actions?) are changing.

Journal prompt examples:

~ What is my daily intention?

~ How do I feel physically?

~ How do I feel emotionally?

~ How can I bring more joy / aliveness into my day?

~ How can I bring more slowness / presence to my day?

Tip #6 - Intention to build a better relationship with yourself

You have the power to change from the inside, out. All day your attention is focussed outwards. A daily meditation practice gives us the space to regularly check in with the body and mind. We allow ourself to slow down, relax and turn our attention inward. We can create a safe space to observe whatever is happening.

If you are not willing to be aware of your own thoughts and feelings, then how can you know what you need to feel better? Imagine going for a cup of tea with a friend in need. Learn to have a similar relationship with your Self. Listen to the messages your body / mind is offering to you. What wisdom, insight and intuition do you find?

Meditation allows us to find clarity, so we can be clear on what you want to achieve. To live purposefully whenever you are unsure about anything simply ask yourself whether the choice takes you closer to or further away from what you want / need.

Tip #7 - 1% better every day

I read Atomic Habits by James Clear and a big theme is being just 1% better every day. Small changes can appear to make no difference, but then something just happens and you see real progress.

A lot of the time people have all or nothing attitude. This often result on us giving up in the face of challenge. Try doing just 1% better and notice what happens.
